Starting and Driving
Engine Operation
•
Do not operate the engine at
full throttle below peak torque
rpm for more than 30 seconds
This condition will shorten
engine life and can cause
serious engine damage.
•
Allow the engine to idle 3 to 5
minutes before shutting it off.
•
Monitor the oil pressure and
coolant temperature warning
lights frequently. Shut the
engine off if the oil pressure
warning light comes.
• If an overheating condition
starts to occur, reduce engine
speed or shift to a lower gear,
or both, until the temperature
returns to normal operating
range. If engine temperature
does not return to normal report
condition to your service
department.
•
Most failures give an early
warning. Look and listen for
changes in performance,
sound, or engine appearance
that may indicate service or
engine repair is needed.
•
Do not keep the engine at low
idle for long periods. Idling
for periods longer than 10
minutes can damage an engine
causing contribution chamber
temperatures to drop so low the
fuel will not burn completely.
Most failures give an early warning.
Look and listen for changes in
performance, sound, engine
appearance that can indicate service or
engine repair is needed.
Some changes to look for are
•
Engine misfire
•
Excessive smoke
•
Vibration
•
Loss of power
•
Unusual engine noise
•
An increase in engine noise
•
Fuel, oil or coolant leaks
•
An increase in fuel
consumption
• Sudden changes in engine
operating temperature or oil
pressure.
CAUTION
Continuous operation with
low coolant temperature
below 60°C or high coolant
temperature above 100°C
can damage the engine.
