About HIPAA (Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act):
HIPAA (US Health and Human Services Law
104-191) is a statute enacted in 1996 by
Congress to encourage national standards
to protect the privacy of Personal Health
Information (PHI). HIPAA Compliance,
is required by institutions handling
confidential patient records. The US
Department of Health and Human Services
issued the Privacy Rule to implement the
requirements of HIPAA. This rule addresses
the use and disclosure of individual’s
protected health information, as well as
standards for individuals’ privacy rights to
understand and control how their health
info. is used.
Deadlines for all Health Care
Providers, including health plans, their
administrators and their clearing houses,
have now all expired.
To comply, a covered entity must develop
and implement policies and procedures
that restrict access and uses of protected
health information based on specific roles
of the members of their workforce. They
must identify the persons, or classes of
persons in the workforce who need access
to protected health information to carry out
their duties, the categories of protected
health information to which access is needed
and any conditions under which they need
the information to do their jobs.
