Advanced LAN Bypass Control Utility
1.8.1
Introduction
Advanced LAN Bypass may be supported on Ethernet ports hosted either directly on
a motherboard as on board network ports or via add-in cards such as Network Mez
-
zanine Cards (NMCs). The LAN controllers, aka NICs, are connected to the CPU(s)
via PCI Express (PCIE).
A dedicated and buffered power rail allows the LAN bypass mechanism to detect
power outages and take appropriate action.
Two network ports form one bypass segment. Both of these network ports can either
connect to the NIC, be disconnected from the NIC, or can be switched into bypass
mode where one ports connects directly to the other and the NIC ports are isolated.
A micro controller (LAN Bypass micro controller) controls this connectivity by switch

ing optical or electrical relays between the ports. Latching relays are used to guaran

tee that the bypass state / connectivity is maintained during absence of power.
Advance LAN Bypass Control Utility (SLA required) is for control advance LAN
Bypass. The host software can access the LAN bypass micro controllers in the sys

tem in order to change behaviour and to activate and use features like the integrated
watchdog functionality.
