Glossary
Always On Dynamic ISDN (AO/DI)
A technology that allows a virtual connection to a corporate net-
work or to the Internet while conserving costs by transmitting
over the low bandwidth D channel. As bandwidth demand in-
creases, B channels are added and then dropped as bandwidth re-
quirement decreases.
AT commands
A set of commands that allows a computer to take control of a mo-
dem and to retrieve information from a modem. AT stands for at-
tention and precedes each command.
Bandwidth Allocation Control Protocol (BACP)
In ISDN, a protocol that controls the addition and removal of
channels from a multichannel link.
bit error rate test (BERT)
A diagnostic tool used to test data integrity by transmitting a
known pattern of bits and then evaluating the subsequent bit error
rate.
Bandwidth on Demand Industry User Group Protocol (BONDING)
A set of protocols that improves interoperability among multi-
plexers from various vendors. BONDING describes a number of
interoperability modes for switched networks so that a sideband
signal can be subdivided into multiple 56 kbps or 64 kbps chan-
nels and then recombined at the receiving end.
