ESCRIPTION
This Quick Start provides instructions for the installation of the
GPON 452/454 Optical Network Termination (ONT) units (see part
numbers listed below). The ONTs have POTS and GigE interfaces
that provide triple-play services. The GPON 452 ONT has two
POTS ports and two Gigabit-Ethernet ports; the GPON 454 ONT
has four POTS ports and four Gigabit-Ethernet ports.
The ONT is to be enclosed in a weather-hardened Network Inter-
face Device (NID) which mounts to the exterior of a building. The
figure below illustrates the ONT in the context of the NID with the
access door of the NID removed.

TELEPHONE TROUBLESHOOTING
1. Identify the bad line.
2. Disconnect the plug from the appropriate POTS jack and plug
any working telephone into that jack.
If the telephone works, there is a problem inside the house.
If the telephone does not work, contact your service provider.
3. Remove the telephone and replace the plug into the POTS jack.
4. Close the unit.
This device is intended to be attached to a receiver that is not used to
receive over-the-air broadcast signals. Connection of this device in any
other fashion may cause harmful interference to radio communications
ans is in violation of the FCC Rules, part 15.

NSTALLATION
This section explains how to install the NID, ground the NID, route
and attach the incoming Fiber, and install the ONT in the NID.
There is also a section on connecting POTS and Ethernet services.
After unpacking the ONT, inspect it for damage. If damage is noted,
file a claim with the carrier and then contact ADTRAN. For more
information, refer to the warranty.

Refer to the national, state and local electrical codes for the
requirements for power and grounding wiring methods.

The protective earth (PE) grounding wire for this product must
be 6 AWG (13.3 mm
2
). The connector must be a suitable,
approved ground wire connector.
■
This equipment must be serviced by authorized service
personnel only. All repair procedures are detailed to allow
sub-assembly repairs ONLY. Authorized service personnel
should not attempt component level repairs or circuit
modifications to the printed circuit board. Improper repairs can
create a safety hazard.
Required Tools and Supplies
In addition to standard technician tools, you must have the following
tools for this installation:

Carpenter’s level
■
3/32 inch screw driver for connecting ONT power
■
5/32 inch hex tamper proof bit
■
Two #10 screws (Max. Head Diameter 0.385”) and appropriate
wall anchors for mounting the NID
■
RJ-45 crimper
■
A telephony/data communication test set
■
Assorted tie wraps for securing cabling and wiring
■
Up to four RJ-45 plugs
For fiber optic connections, you must have the following tools:

PON power meter with wavelength filtering
■
Fiberscope or videoscope
■
Fiber optics Fusion splicing tools
■
Fiber connector cleaning tool
■
SC/APC fiber connector
