8.4.2 VLAN
Configuration
Ethernet is a network technology based on the Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision
Detect (CSMA/CD) mechanism. Because the medium is shared, collisions and excessive
broadcasts are common on Ethernet networks. To address the issue, virtual LAN (VLAN)
was introduced to break a LAN down into separate VLANs.
Virtual LAN (VLAN) support to a Layer 2 switch offers some of the benefits of both bridging
and routing. Like a bridge, a VLAN switch forwards traffic based on the Layer 2 header,
which is fast, and like a router, it partitions the network into logical segments, which provides
better administration, security and management of multicast traffic. Virtual Local Area
Networks (VLANs) are used to provide connectivity between ports and other entities in the
Switch System and across Ethernet Virtual Connections across Ethernet Networks.
