CHOOSING A PREVENTION METHOD

The fill and make-up water must be softened where necessary to within

the recommended range. Additives can be added to keep the limestone

in solution in the water. ACV recommends Fernox (www.fernox.com)

and Sentinel (www.sentinel-solutions.net) additives.

Please note that these additives must be used in accordance with the

instructions issued by the manufacturer of the water treatment product.

The water hardness must be checked regularly and the values entered

in the service log.

OTHER PARAMETERS

In addition to the oxygen and the water hardness, other parameters of

the water in the heating systems must be checked:

Acidity

6.6 < pH < 8.5

Conductivity

< 400 μS/cm (at 25°C)

Chlorides

< 125 mg/l

Iron

< 0.5 mg/l

Copper

< 0.1 mg/l

These parameters must be measured and the water must be treated

if these values are outside the range. ACV recommends Fernox (www.

fernox.com) and Sentinel (www.sentinel-solutions.net) additives.

Please note that these additives must be used in accordance with the

instructions issued by the manufacturer of the water treatment product.

CLEANING THE SYSTEM

Before the system is filled, it must be cleaned in accordance with

standard EN14868. Chemical cleaning agents can be used. ACV

recommends Fernox (www.fernox.com) and Sentinel (www.sentinel-

solutions.net) additives.

Please note that these additives must be used in accordance with the

instructions issued by the manufacturer of the water treatment product.

If any of the recommendations cannot be followed, the

boiler must be hydraulically separated from the system

by a plate type heat exchanger.

GENERAL

The fill water contains elements likely to damage the exchanger of a

boiler if the concentration is outside the appropriate range.

The risk increases with the size of the system because the quantity of

water in the circuit increases depending on the installed capacity. To

cover these risks in a cascade installation, ACV demands the installation

of a plate type heat exchanger between the boilers and the heating

circuit.

PREVENTION PRINCIPLES

OXYGEN

Depending on the volume of water in the heating circuit, a certain

amount of oxygen is introduced when the installation is filled. During

operation, a little oxygen is added if the water is topped up and/or

through the walls of the hydraulic components without an oxygen

barrier (PE pipes & connections).

Oxygen corrodes the steel and generates sludge. ACV HeatMaster heat

exchangers are made of stainless steel and are therefore insensitive

to corrosion. However, the sludge produced by the corrosion of the

components in the system made of ordinary steel (radiators, etc.) will

be deposited on the hot surfaces, including those inside the exchanger.

These deposits in the heat exchanger reduce the water flow rate and

thermally insulate the exchange surfaces, which is likely to damage

them.

ENSURING PROTECTION AGAINST OXYGEN

-  Mechanical process: a deaerator combined with a desludger installed

according to the manufacturer’s instructions effectively reduces the

effects of oxygen on the installation;

-  Chemical process: additives keep the oxygen in solution in the water.

ACV recommends Fernox (www.fernox.com) and Sentinel (www.

sentinel-solutions.net) additives.

Please note that these additives must be used according to the

instructions issued by the manufacturer of the water treatment

product.

WATER HARDNESS

Depending also on the volume of water in the system, the water

hardness and the fill frequency, a certain amount of limestone gets

into the circuit. The resulting fur is deposited on the hot surfaces,

including those inside the heat exchanger, reducing the passage of

water and thermally insulating the active surfaces of the exchanger. This

phenomenon can damage the heat exchanger.

In order to maintain the performance levels of your

HeatMaster® in professional installations, we recommend

softening the water if the hardness is above 20°fH.
