If You Have a Flat Tire
If you have a flat tire while driving,
slop in a safe place to change it.
Stopping in traffic or on the shoulder
of a busy road is dangerous. Drive
slowly along the shoulder until you
get to an exit or an area to stop that is
far away from the traffic lanes.
Changing a Flat Tire
1. Park the car on firm, level ground
away from traffic. Turn on the
hazard warning lights and turn the
ignition to LOCK (0).
2. Put the transmission in Park
(automatic) or Reverse (manual).
Set the parking brake.
3. Open the hood (see page
111
).
Unscrew the wing b o l t holding the
folding spare tire. Remove the
folding spare tire f r o m the com-
partment. The w i n g bolt and wheel
may be very warm f r o m the air
passing through t h e radiator. Use
a cloth or gloves ( n o t provided) to
protect your hands when remov-
ing the spare tire.
Taking Care of the Unexpected
The car can easily roll off the
jack, seriously injuring anyone
underneath.
Follow the directions for changing
a tire exactly, and never get
under the car when it is
supported only by the jack.
