Seat Belts, Child Restraint Systems
The seat belt was being worn
during a collision. This strains the
fabric and the belt could fail in
another collision. When it is
replaced, also have the belt an-
chors checked for any damage.
Cleaning
Keep the seat belts clean and dry. A
damp belt is uncomfortable, does not
perform as well, and will not go in
and out of the retractor as easily.
To clean the seat belts:
1. Pull the seat belts out of their
retractors so the areas you want to
clean are fully exposed.
2. Use a soft brush to scrub them
with a mixture of mild soap and
warm water. Bleach, dye, and
cleaning solvents can weaken the
seat belt material.
3. Let them air-dry out of their
retractors with the windows open.
Child Restraint Systems
For safety, your child should always
be restrained while riding in your
car. This lessens the chance of injury
in an accident, sudden maneuver or
stop. Infants and young children are
too small to be fully protected by
your car's seat belts. They require
special child restraint systems. All
states have laws requiring that
children ride in proper child re-
straints. Check the laws in your state.
