Inspection Steps
For Rope Grab:
1. Inspect the entire unit for corrosion, wear, cracks, distortion or other damage.
2. Inspect the Rope Grab for damage: Look for cracks, dents, or deformities. Look for bending or wear.
3. Inspect the attachment and locking elements to ensure that they moves freely without hesitation,
binding or sticking.
4. Inspect the locking elements and springs. Ensure they are in the proper location and undamaged.
Ensure that the teeth are not rounded or worn.
5. Inspect the Rope Grab for ice, snow, frost, or other contaminants that may prevent the function of
internal components. If present, the Rope Grab must be cleaned to remove these contaminants. Caution
should be used in environments where these contaminants are present.
6. Inspect the auto-locking function of the Rope Grab by installing the Rope Grab on the vertical lifeline,
release and allow the Rope Grab to free fall on the lifeline. If the Rope Grab does not lock on the lifeline,
then the Rope Grab must be removed from service.
Inspection
Steps For
Lifeline:
1. Verify that the lifeline meets all requirements from Table 1.
2. The vertical lifeline should be free of excessive buildup of dirt, paint, snow, or ice that could prevent the
Rope Grab or lifelines from working properly.
3. Check for chemical or heat damage (indicated by brown, discolored, or brittle areas).
4. Check for ultraviolet damage, indicated by discoloration and the presence of splinters and slivers on the
rope surface.
Hooks
Inspect Snap Hooks, Carabiner, Rebar Hooks, etc. for signs of damage, corrosion, and proper working
condition. Where present: Swivels should rotate freely, and Carabiner and Hook Gates should open, close,
lock, and unlock properly. Inspect Rope Grabs per the instructions included with the Rope Grab or Vertical
Lifeline.
Web Lanyards
Webbing and
Stitching
Inspect webbing; material must be free of cuts, frays, or broken fibers. Check for tears, abrasions, heavy
soiling, mold, burns, or discoloration. Inspect stitching; Check for pulled or cut stitches. Broken stitches may
be an indication that the harness has been impact loaded and must be removed from service.
Energy
Absorber
Verify that the integral Energy Absorber has not been activated. An open cover or torn cover, webbing pulled
out of the cover, torn or frayed webbing, and ripped or missing stitching are indicators of an activated Energy
Absorber.
Labels
All labels should be present and fully legible. See Figure 12
