Strategies for Using

ping

Follow these strategies for using ping:

■

Ping devices when your network is operating normally so that you
have a performance baseline for comparison.

■

Ping by

IP address

when:

■

You want to test devices on different subnetworks. This method
allows you to ping your network segments in an organized way,
rather than having to remember all the hostnames and locations.

■

Your DNS server is down and your system cannot look up host
names properly. You can ping with IP addresses even if you
cannot access hostname information.

■

Ping by

hostname

when you want to identify DNS server problems.

■

To troubleshoot problems involving large packet sizes, ping the
remote host repeatedly, increasing the packet size each time.
