Prerequisites for
Software
Installation

Read this section for important notices that pertain to Switch 4007
modules prior to upgrading them to software release 3.0.5.

CAUTION:

Software installation procedures may also contain

prerequisite steps. Be sure to read the complete procedure even if you
have updated software on your Switch 4007 in the past.

CAUTION:

Modules in the same chassis must operate at compatible

software releases. See

Table 1

on

page 11

for this information.

CAUTION:

Before you upgrade software on Switch 4007 switch fabric

modules and switching modules to Release 3.0.5, ensure that the EME
has already been upgraded with the required amount of CPU RAM and
compatible software.

CAUTION:

This release requires that each EME module has 20 MB of

CPU RAM. To determine the current CPU RAM size, enter

show eme

from

the EME command line interface. The

CPU Ram Size (MB)

field on the

left side of the screen indicates the amount of CPU RAM. If an EME
module has 8 MB of CPU RAM, you must replace the 4 MB DRAM card in
each EME module with a 16 MB DRAM card. After you install it, it
combines with the 4 MB of permanent RAM to yield the required 20 MB.
To order a 16 MB DRAM card (order number 3CB9EE), contact your
network supplier or 3Com representative.

CAUTION:

If you do not have dual EMEs installed in a powered up

chassis, you will lose power to all modules if you remove the EME module
to install the 16 MB card. If you have dual EME modules installed and
both of them need RAM upgrades, 3Com recommends that you upgrade
the RAM on the Slave/Secondary EME module first. Follow this
procedure:

Remove the Secondary/Slave EME module and install the 16 MB card.

Reinstall the module and wait for it to come back up with
Secondary/Slave status.

3

Remove the Primary/Master EME module and install the 16 MB card.

4

Reinstall the module.

Following this procedure minimizes the disruption to your system (caused
by EME switchovers) and network.
