GENERAL SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

Riding bicycles in the winter is a lot of fun. You get to ride
in different places, in different ways, with different gear than
most other seasons. Our mission at 45North is to enhance the
comfort and control our customers experience while riding in cold
weather. While we produce gear that improves control on ice and
snow, there are inherent risks one assumes while riding in such
conditions. Like other cycling disciplines, winter cyclists have
different skill levels and experience. It is your responsibility to
ride in ways that do not jeopardize your safety. We help you gain
comfort and control with technical solutions for hands, feet and
traction. You help yourself by using your common sense! With that,
here are some basic winter cycling guidelines to consider:
•  Use blinking lights and reflective materials on your bicycle

and body

•  Dress in layers using clothing made of wool, synthetic fiber,

and windproof materials

•  Carry spare gloves, socks and a light insulating jacket with real

or synthetic down-fill

Riding studded tires on ice or snow does not provide the same
amount of traction as a normal tire on pavement – use caution
whenever you ride on ice or snow!

COMPATIBILITY AND INTENDED USE

45North studs are only designed for replacement of studs on
45North studded tires and additions to stud-ready 45North tires.
They are intended to be used in snowy and icy conditions, and not
intended to be used for year-round riding.

INSTALLATION

1.  Insert replacement stud into stud tool (FIG. 1).
2.  Insert stud at a 45° angle to the stud hole (FIG. 2).

Once half of the stud is inserted, rotate forward to fully insert
while pressing firmly from both sides of the tire.

3.  Remove stud tool from tire. The stud should be fully seated

(FIG. 3–4). If it is not, reinsert the stud tool into the stud hole
and push in until stud is fully seated.

4.  After inserting all desired studs, ride the tires for 25–30 miles

while minimizing sharp turns and hard braking. This will allow
the studs to properly seat into the tire and minimize the risk of
losing studs.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE

Periodically check to make sure that the studs are properly secured
within the tire, and replace studs as necessary.
