Acronyms and Abbreviations
Terminology Explanations
10Base-TX
10Mbps Ethernet, standard for category 3, 4, and 5 twisted pair cable in
IEEE specifications
100Base-TX
100Mbps fast Ethernet, standard for category 5 twisted pair cable or
above in IEEE specifications
Adaptive
In relation to speed, duplex and flow control port, refers to a feature of
automatic configuration to the most proper mode.
Backbone
A high-speed network, for connecting multiple low-speed networks
Bandwidth
Amount of information that can be transmitted over a channel. For
example, the bandwidth of Fast Ethernet is 100 Mbps.
Baud rate
A term of signaling rate, designed as frequencies of status change of
electrical or optical transmission medium
Bridge
A device at layer 2 in the 7-layer OSI mode, which can connect LANs or
network segments that use the same protocol and provide the functions
of auto learning of network address and network configuration
Broadcast
A data packet is sent to all devices on a network.
Broadcast
storm
Broadcast frame or multicast frame is forwarded endlessly on a bridge
due to the bridge.
CSMA/CD
Abbreviated from Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detect, a
protocol for data transmission over Ethernet as specified in IEEE 802.3
standard
CRC
Abbreviated from Cyclic Redundancy Check. To ensure integrity of
contents of a network frame, CRC is calculated by MAC sending process
and detected by MAC receiving process of a site.
Filtering
A capability of many devices (such as bridge, switch and router) of
deciding whether to forward the data frame, which is received by a port,
to the next port. Such capability can avoid the access of unauthorized
users or equipment.
Flow control
A congestion control mechanism to avoid loss of data packages and
congestion of port when a network device sends data to overloaded port.
Full-duplex
A switch sets up a point-to-point connection between nodes on LAN, and
allows the nodes to receive and send data packets simultaneously.
Semi-duplex
At a time, communication between two nodes is available in only one
directly, but not in two directions.
IP
Internet Protocol, located in layer 3 in the 7-layer OSI mode, a part of
TCP/IP
IP Address
A value comprising 32 bits to identify a node by using IP protocol
MAC
Media Access Control, a medium-independent function of sending and
receiving frames with the CSMA/CD access method as specified by
IEEE
MAC
Address
Media Access Control address, known as hardware or physical address,
comprising six bytes
