sockets.
There are two types of attachments that can be made, each requiring a different type of cable:

marked "uplink" or MDI.
Some hubs and
switches provide a few
ports with selections to
make them type MDI for
uplinks and daisy-
chaining.
Crossover
(or Null)
Directly to another PC's network
adapter.
Direct PC-PC
connections, without an
intervening hub or
switch.
The wiring for a
straight cable
is simply pin 1 to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, etc. Pins 4, 5, 7 and 8
are not used. The wiring for a
crossover
