Drainage System and Wash-water Pipe System
1.
General
You must do checks at regular intervals to make sure that all drain pipes are not
blocked. The checks on the drain pipes (3, Fig. 1) , (8) and (10) from the
turbocharger, piston rod glands and piston underside are important.
The ambient temperature and humidity can cause condensate to flow out upstream
and downstream of the cooler at the water drain (11). Very high ambient conditions
can make up to 0.16 kg/kWh of condensate.
2.
Condensate Drain
Note: Blocked drains let too much condensate collect in the scavenge air
receiver. The water / water vapor has an unwanted effect on piston
operation and increases wear on the piston rings and cylinder liners.
The condensate drain must operate correctly as follows (see also
Checks and
Precautions, paragraph 2):
1) Make sure that the butterfly valves (26, Fig. 1) are open during operation.
2) Make sure that all valves in the drain pipe are fully open.
3) Make sure that the 3-way ball cock (17) is in the position USUAL OPERATION.
Note: The condensate collectors (20) collect dirt particles.
4) Remove dirt particles (rust) that collect in the condensate collectors (20) at
regular intervals (see the Maintenance Manual 0380
−
1).
5) At regular intervals, look at the sight glasses of the condensate collectors (20) to
make sure that water flows.
If one, or the two level switches (7) activates an alarm (condensate level too high),
you must find the cause immediately and correct the defect. The possible causes of
the alarm are:
D
The 3-way ball cock (17) is in the position CLOSED.
D
One or the two butterfly valves (26) are closed.
D
The scavenge air cooler is defective (see
Scavenge Air Cooler Out of
Service).
D
One or the two throttling discs (16) are blocked.
D
There is too much contamination in the condensate collectors (20) (the filter is
clogged).
Note: You must clean the filters in the condensate collector (12) and the
throttling discs (16)
as soon as possible.
D
To clean the condensate collectors (20) and the throttling discs (16 )do step a) to
step b)
a) Stop the engine.
b) Clean the condensate collector (12).
c) Clean the throttling discs (16).
Note: For engines with two turbochargers there are two more level switches
(LS4072A and LS4076A) installed. For more data see,
Auxiliary Systems, Exhaust Gas / TC / Scavenge Air / Auxiliary Blowers.
