Only a qualified mechanic trained in the repair and maintenance of braking systems should attempt brake
repair, and replacement. When making adjustments or repairs to the surge brakes: be aware that there is
a left and right brake assembly.
Your trailer brakes must be inspected and serviced immediately if a loss of performance is indicated. With
normal use, servicing at one year intervals is usually adequate. With increased usage, this work should be
done more frequently as required.
Brake Lining
A simple visual inspection of your brake linings will tell if they are usable. Replacement is necessary if the
lining is worn (to within 1/16 or less), contaminated with grease or oil, or abnormally scored or gouged.
Hairline heat cracks are normal in bonded linings and should not be cause for concern. When replacement
is necessary, it is important to replace both shoes on each brake and both brakes of the same axle. This
will help retain the “balance" of your brakes. Before reassembling, apply a light film of grease or anti-seize
compound on the brake anchor pin, the actuating arm bushing and pin, and the areas on the backing plate
that are in contact with the brake shoes.
Wheel Cylinders

Inspect for leaks and smooth operation.
•
Clean with brake cleaner and flush with fresh brake fluid.
•
Hone or replace as necessary.
Brake Lines
•
Check for cracks, kinks, or blockage. Flush with fresh brake fluid.
•
Bleed system to remove all air. Replace as necessary.
•
Shoes and Linings
Hardware
•
Check all hardware.
•
Check shoe return spring, hold down springs, and adjuster springs for stretch or wear. Replace as
required.
•
Service kits are available.
To make brake adjustments to your LT Log trailer, follow the procedure explained below. If you are not sure
about making these adjustments, have a qualified mechanic make the adjustments.
Ensure the machine is set in
safe condition
(see 8.2) before
performing maintenance.
1.
Raise the trailer wheel so it can turn freely.
2.
Locate and remove the dust cover from the adjusting slot on the
lower back of the brake backing plate.
3.
Locate the brake adjusting screw [called a star adjuster] through
the adjusting slot and insert a brake adjusting tool. Adjust the
brake shoes out [tighten by turning the star adjuster down on the
left side drum and up on the right side drum] until tires will not turn
by hand, then back off [loosen by turning the star adjuster up on
the left side drum and down on the right side drum] the adjustment
until the wheel turns freely, usually with a slight lining drag.
4.
If properly adjusted the drum should turn freely and have a barely
audible sound of the shoes against the drums. This indicates that
the shoes are in contact with the drum, but not dragging a lot.
