may cause inaccurate SpO2 readings.
•
The finger should be placed properly, or else it may cause inaccurate measurement.
•
The device measuring performance depends on the pulsatile character of the artery. The
reading should NOT be considered reliable and accurate if the following conditions are present
during measurement:
•
Shock or cardiac arrest.
•
Hypothermia.
•
Hypotension.
•
Severe vasoconstriction.
•
Anemia or severe anemia.
•
Venous pulsations.
•
Arterial occlusion was proximal to the sensor.
•
Weak pulse quality (Low perfusion).
•
Evidence of ventilation-perfusion mismatch.
•
Bodyweight is less than 10 lbs.
•
After the administration of a cardiovascular drug.
•
Fingers that are too thin or too cold, could impact the normal measurement of SpO2 and pulse
rate.
•
To maintain the highest degree of accuracy, it is recommended that the finger and the oximeter
sensor/probe is kept as still as possible.
•
Obstructions or dirt on the sensor's red light or detector may cause sensor failure. Make sure
there are NO obstructions and the sensor is clean.
•
DO NOT pour liquid on to the device or the sensor and light tube.
•
When a trend toward patient deoxygenation is indicated, blood samples should be analyzed
by a laboratory co-oximeter for a full diagnosis of the patient's condition based on advice from
a healthcare provider.
NOTES
•
SpO2 measurements may be adversely affected in the presence of upper ambient light. Shield
the sensor area (with a surgical tower, or direct sunlight, for example) as necessary.
•
Optical crosstalk can occur when two or more sensors are located in adjoining areas. It can be
eliminated by covering each site with opaque material. Optical crosstalk may adversely affect
the accuracy of the SpO2 readings.
•
If some abnormal conditions appear on the screen during the test process, pull out the finger
and reinsert to reset the device.
•
Clean the surface of the SpO2 sensor and light tube before it is used in diagnosis.
•
Please refer to Chapter 13 " Cleaning & Disinfection " for details.
