FITTING THE GRATE
The Grate
The grate in the Villager Esprit stoves,
comprises of a series of reciprocating cast iron
grate bars, seated on a pivoted ‘comb’. All bars in
the grate are identical, but every other bar is
turned through 180 degrees, with the ends of the
bars marked ‘H’ sitting on the high sections of the
comb, and the ends marked ‘L’ sitting on the low
sections.
Assembling The Grate
If you have purchased the riddling grate bar set as
an upgrade to a
wood only
burning stove you will
need to remove the following items before
commencing with the assembly and fitting of the
grate. ( see page 3 for identification images)
1. Remove the Fuel Retainer
2.
Remove the Wood Tray
3.
Remove Wood Cover Plug (See Fig 1)
To assemble the grate
,
First fit the rear grate bar support into the
left
and
right
Side Landing slots as shown in Fig 2.
Next fit the comb and push/pull rod follows:-
Fit the riddling push rod into the stove body and
receiving hole in the right side landing, align the
reduced middle section with the slot in the top of
the side landing.
Insert the comb into the cut-out hole in the left
stove side landing. Align the slot so as to allow the
section of the comb and actuator blade to drop into
the receiving slot in the right side landing, as the
blade section is lowered into place ensure that it
locates onto the push rod reduced middle section.
Check for free movement by ‘riddling’ the comb
using the push/pull rod.

Fit the grate bars to the low sections of the comb
first, inserting ends marked ‘H’ into the rear
channel with the groove on the underside of the
bar located on the up stand tab, and then lowering
end marked ‘L’ onto the low section of the comb,
see Fig. 4. (page 6)
The upper bar is fitted in a similar manner, but with
the end marked ‘L’ inserted in the rear channel,
and the end marked ‘H’ seated on the high section
of the comb. See Fig. 5. for the assembled grate
layout.

ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
Remove Wood Cover Plug
To remove the cover plug, undo the retaining nut
inside the stove ash pit area using a ring ended
17mm spanner. The nut can be accessed inside the
stove body via a cut-away section directly behind the
head of the cover plug coach bolt.
