• Expose the upper arm.
• Close the air extraction vault by tightening the air drain screw.
• Pull the cuff over the upper arm so that the lower edge is posi-
tioned 2-3 cm above the elbow joint, the tube should be leading
downwards.
• Place the marker “arteria” above the artery of the upper arm. The
control line for assessing the arm circumference must remain
within the marker for the arm circumference. If this is not the case,
choose a cuff fitting to the arm circumference of the patient.
3. Measuring blood pressure
• If blood-pressure values are not know, inflate the cuff to approx.
200 mmHg. However, if you can clearly hear thumping sounds in
the stethoscope, continue inflating until no more sounds can be
heard.
• Slowly unscrew the air drain screw, thereby allowing the air to es-
cape from the cuff.
• The pointer of the manometer will slowly run back to its neutral posi-
tion. By turning the air drain screw, the speed at which the air is vented
can be adjusted. (Recommendation of the WHO: 2-3 mmHg/second)
Now observe exactly the needle excursion on the dial and listen
out for the noises which you can year through the stethoscope.
• On hearing the first clearly thumping sound,
read off the systolic blood-pressure value
on the dial and make a note of the reading
(Fig. 1).
• Listen out for rhythmic knocking in your
stethoscope. When the sounds stop or at the
moment of the last audible sound, read off
• After determining the diastole, open the
air drain screw to release the remaining air
from the cuff. Remove the cuff after the air
is completely drained.
the diastolic blood-pressure value on the dial
and make a note of this reading too (Fig. 2).
