E. Measuring Azimuth Back Lash
Figure 87 - Azimuth Movement (Back Lash)
(1) When power is not applied to the searchlight, there will be an allowable amount of rotational
movement (back lash) of the gimbal legs in the azimuth plane. The maximum allowable amount of
movement is 8 mm (refer Figure 87, Detail A).
(2) This movement may be measured using the following method.
(a) Place a graduated straight edge across the rear section of the dovetail mounting block as
shown in Figure 87, Detail B.
(b) Place a second straight edge (Figure 87, Detail B) at right angles to the graduated straight
edge so that the top edge is touching the underside of the graduated straight edge. The face
of the second straight edge should be in contact with the face of the azimuth motor housing
(Figure 87, Detail B).
(c) Hold both straight edges firmly in position while rotating the gimbal to the left until movement
stops.
NOTE: The two straight edges must be held firmly and not allowed to move during
this measuring procedure.
(d) Record the measured position shown on the graduated straight edge
[Figure 87, Detail B, (a)].
