Slack Adjuster Function Test
1. Rotate the slack adjuster hex extension 3 /
4
turn counterclockwise (you should
need to apply 25 to 30 lbs.-ft. of torque, and a ratcheting sound will be noted). Mark the
hex extension with chalk and then apply the brakes several times and watch for the hex
to rotate clockwise. The adjuster is designed to move in small increments so it will take
several brake applications to bring the adjuster to the fully adjusted position.
2. If the hex extension did not rotate clockwise or it took less than 15 lbs.-ft. of
torque to rotate the hex extension then the slack adjuster must be replaced. If an imme-
diate replacement part is not available, then the brakes must be kept in adjustment
manually until a new slack adjuster can be installed.
3. If the hex extension rotates clockwise with repeated brake applications and the
torque required to rotate the hex extension manually counterclockwise is greater than
15 lbs.-ft., then the slack adjuster is functioning properly. If you were performing this
function test because of improper stroke measurements, then you need to examine the
foundation brake for the source of trouble.
4. Readjust the brake after the function test.
