Thermal Management
There are two types of cooling techniques used for thermal management. The first type is
active cooling where a fan is turned on to cool the system. The second type is passive
cooling where the CPU speed is reduced or other devices’ power consumption is reduced in
an effort to reduce heat generation. In case the fan cannot cool the system, the passive
cooling method is then activated.
In non-ACPI mode, thermal management is achieved by controlling the fan depending on the
temperature of the CPU. The system may also be shut down whenever the temperature can’t
be kept within tolerable limits by active cooling methods. The current temperatures defined
for thermal management are as follows:
1. 60
°
C* / 55
°
C*: The fan is turned on when the temperature is over 60
°
C*. The fan is
turned off when temperature is reduced to 55
°
C* .
2. 85
°
C*/80
°
C*: Thermal throttling is turned on when the temperature is over 85
°
C*.
Thermal throttling is turned off when the temperature is reduced to 80
°
C*.
3. 90
°
C*: The system will shut down immediately when it over-heats (over 90
°
C*).
In ACPI mode, thermal management is the same as legacy mode.
NOTE:
* Regarding thermal threshold; please refer to thermal specifications.
These values are the sample values.
