3. Remove the bolts that secure the belt cover (Fig. 28) to
the lawn mower housing and lift off the cover.

4. Shift the ground speed control lever into Neutral and as
far back as possible.
5. Loosen the cable retaining screw (Fig. 30).

6. Pull the shift lever to the right until it is tight against the
stop on the gear case (Fig. 30).
7. Pull the cable through the cable retainer to the right to
remove any slack (Fig. 30).
8. Tighten the cable retaining screw.
9. Install the belt cover.
Adjusting the Wheel Drive Cable
1. Close the door in the lawn mower housing and remove
the grass bag.
2. Rotate the control knob (Fig. 30) clockwise 1/2 turn if
the lawn mower does not self-propel. If the lawn mower
creeps forward, rotate the knob 1/2 turn
counterclockwise to loosen the belt.

3. Slowly pull the lawn mower backward while you
gradually move the control bar toward the handle.
Note: The adjustment is correct when the rear wheels
stop turning and the control bar is about one inch
(2.5 cm) from the handle (Fig. 31).

4. Connect the wire to the spark plug.
Changing the Oil Filter
Replace the oil filter (Fig. 20) after every 100 operating
hours or yearly, whichever occurs first.
1. Drain the gasoline from fuel tank; refer to steps 1
through 4 of Emptying the Fuel Tank on page 24.
2. Drain the oil. Refer to Changing the Engine Oil on
page 18.
