9. SETUP GUIDE
The MX7960 turbo is capable of making over 400ps @ 1.6㎏/㎠(22.8psi) boost.
However, around 330ps is the maximum stock engine internals are able to to withstand before
parts such as connecting rods begin to fail. Accordingly, boost should be limited to around
1.0〜1.1㎏/㎠(14.2〜15.6psi). Note that boost settings should be made in 4th/5th gear. Configuring
boost in lower gears will result in higher actual boost as load is significantly greater at higher gears.
(You may notice that boost begins to fall as you raise the rpm beyond peak boost. This is normal)
Camshafts, turbo suction pipe, exhaust manifold, turbo outlet, catalytic converters as well as
exhaust systems can all impact performance. With stock camshafts, exhaust manifold and turbo
outlet around 350ps is achievable @ 1.0〜1.1㎏/㎠(14.2〜15.6psi) boost. Upgrading all the above
should make around 400ps @ 1.6㎏/㎠(22.8psi) boost.
Stock pistons can withstand up to around 330ps.
However, the M7960 turbo @ 1.6㎏/㎠(22.8psi) boost significantly increases combustion pressure
which can cause the stock pistons to melt. Therefore, It is highly recommended that you upgrade to
forged pistons for high boost setups. The head gasket should also be upgraded at the same time.
Stock connecting rods can withstand up to around 330ps.
.Beyond this, it is highly recommended that you upgrade the connecting rods
Stock camshafts are incapable of generating the exhaust pressure needed to take advantage of the
larger turbo. Upgrading the camshafts will allow you to maximize the potential of the turbo.
Increasing boost will naturally increase combustion pressure. To maintain a secure seal at high boost
is it strongly recommended that you upgrade to a high performance head gasket with superior sealing.
Target horse power×5.9÷No. of cylinders ＝ required injector capacity per cylinder.
Injectors should be operating at around 80〜90% capacity to maintain good fuel atomization.
