NOTICE
IMPORTANT
Do not disassemble the pistons (9), rotating kit
assembly (10), spider (16), or piston assemblies (15).
If parts are worn or damaged, replace the parts.
NOTE
If bearing replacement is required, the entire housing
assembly (3) must be replaced.
1.
Disassemble front wheel motor as shown.
2.
Place parts in assembly order on a clean work area
as they are removed.
Inspection Notes
• Keeping parts in assembly order, clean and air dry
each item for inspection.
• Inspect for worn or defective parts.
NOTE
Do not lap the piston shoes, piston block, or backplate
surfaces.
• Inspect pistons and shoes. The pistons should be
snug, and the shoes should be flat and display no
signs of flaking.
• Inspect piston block. Make sure the flat surface is
free of score marks.
• Inspect the flat surface of the backplate. It should be
free of score marks and metal build-up.
• Look for metal chips or slivers during cleaning (an
indication of damage to pump or other hydraulic
component).
• Inspect all parts for cracks, nicks, burrs, and
excessive wear. Inspect for scoring, galling, and
scratches on surfaces. Replace parts as necessary.
Assembly Notes
NOTICE
• Assemble the front wheel motor by reversing the
order of disassembly.
• Lubricate all finished part surfaces with hydraulic fluid
prior to assembly to provide start-up lubrication
between rotating parts.
• Lubricate all O-rings and seals prior to assembly.
• Lubricate the pilot (17), spider (16), piston
assemblies (15), connector plate (14), and thrust
race (11) prior to assembly.
• Install the drive shaft (24) into the piston block at the
beveled edge end. The retaining ring (22) on the
drive shaft must be on the beveled side of the piston
block.
• Install the connector plate (14) with the flat side
positioned against the piston assemblies (15).
• Press shaft seal (2) into the housing assembly (3)
until the seal is slightly below the counterbore face.
• Tighten backplate assembly screws (27) to 15–18
lb-ft (20–24 N·m).
• Pressure filter traction system upon start-up if metal
debris is found in system oil or motor. (See “Portable
In-Line Filter” on page 5-4.)
Front (Drive) Axle Assembly
Removal and Installation
1.
Park the mower safely. (See “Park Mower Safely” on

on page 5-47.)
• It is important that motor parts are marked
and placed in assembly order to aid in
assembly.
• It is important that all motor parts are
