8.2 OPERATING WITH GLYCOL (ANTIFREEZE) AND WITH A SET POINT ABOVE
48°F OR BELOW 38°F AMBIENT
A.
The chiller is never to be operated below 48°F leaving water temperature without the
precautionary measures outlined in section 8.1. All controls are factory adjusted for
using water at 48°F setpoint and higher operation. Users operating at set point
temperatures above 48°F may sometimes use a glycol & water mixture (antifreeze)
to protect the system from scaling & corrosion and as an added safety for freeze
protection of the system.
B.
Operating using a glycol & water mixture (antifreeze) at set point temperatures above
48°F requires adjusting the low pressure limit switch.
C.
Before adjusting the low pressure limit switch, a satisfactory antifreeze solution must
be substituted for the recirculating chilled water. This mixture will consist of inhibited
propylene glycol and water. Do not substitute an inhibited propylene glycol and
water solution for common automotive type antifreeze. The “Cut-Out & Cut-In
Settings for Low Pressure Switches” chart below outlines the glycol percentages at
various water temperatures.
D.
Fluid must be tested with a refractometer to verify proper glycol percentages for freeze
protection. The ratio shall be according to the ‘Refrigerant Low Pressure Switch Cut-Out
& Cut-In Settings’ chart below. Using more glycol than necessary is not recommended
E.
DO NOT USE AUTOMOTIVE TYPE ANTI-FREEZE.
F.
If your unit is equipped with an adjustable low pressure switch, adjust the low pressure
switch according to the specifications in the chart on the next page. Never reduce the cut
