You can switch between having the UP and DOWN switches work as 
momentary or alternating type switches. 
A momentary switch is to be compared to keyboard hold pedal. Connection is
made when pressed and no connection is present when released.
An alternating type switch is a toggle switch. When pressed once and released
immediately the connection is held. When repressed the switch is disconnected.
