5-7
5-6 Installing
Memory
CAUTION
Exercise extreme care when installing or removing memory modules
to prevent any possible damage.
1. Insert each memory module vertically into its slot, paying attention to the notch
along the bottom of the module to prevent inserting the module incorrectly (see
Figure 5-4). For each bank of four DIMM slots, install fi rst into DIMM 1A, then
1B, then 2A, then 2B. See support information and notes on optimizing memory
perfomance below.
2. Gently press down on the memory module until it snaps into place.
Note:
Each processor has its own built-in memory controller. 256 MB, 512 MB, 1
GB, 2 GB and 4 GB memory modules are supported. It is highly recommended that
you remove the power cord from the system before installing or changing DIMMs.
Support
The H8QC8/H8QCE supports single or dual-channel, registered ECC
DDR400/333/266 SDRAM.
Both interleaved and non-interleaved memory are supported, so you may populate
any number of DIMM slots (see note on previous page).
Populating two adjacent slots at a time with memory modules of the same size and
type will result in interleaved (128-bit) memory, which is faster than non-interleaved
(64-bit) memory.
Optimizing memory performance
With the mandatory four processors installed, it is better to spread out pairs of
DIMMs across all four CPU memory banks than fi lling up one CPU memory bank
while leaving any others empty. For example, if you were to install eight DIMMs
you should install two in the CPU1 DIMM slots, two in the CPU2 DIMM slots, two
in the CPU3 DIMM slots and two in the CPU4 DIMM slots (slots 1A and 1B in
each of the four banks) rather than four in any single CPU bank of four slots. If
you install four more, install two in the remaining CPU1 DIMM slots and two in the
the remaining CPU2 DIMM slots, etc. This balances the load over all CPUs to
optimize performance.
Maximum memory
: 64 GB for DDR333/266 and 32 GB for DDR400.
