3.7 Patient Transfer
Instructions
W A R N I N G – P E R S O N A L
INJURY HAZARD:
• Maximum patient weight
147 kilograms (325 lbs.).
• The VIC chair is not in-
tended to replace a
stretcher or a gurney.
• Do not sit on end – as
tipping may occur.
• Do not stand on foot rest.
• When not in use, do not
leave the VIC chair in a
recline position.
• When patient is seated in
the chair, the side rails
should be up and the pa-
tient should be secured
with restraint straps.
• Patient entry, egress and
transfer from the VIC chair
should always be from the
center side rail location
with the side rail in the
down position and brakes
locked.
• At no time should the pa-
tient be permitted to enter
or exit from the ends of the
VIC chair when in partial or
total recline position.
• The patient should be
placed in a fully upright
position with chair in low
height when transporting
patient. The patient should
never be transported when
the VIC is in a recline posi-
tion,
• The brakes should always
be applied when patient is
not being transported.
• When chair is in the non-
transport mode: Patient
must remain fully upright;
Patient must never be re-
clined; Patient must never
be left unattended.
Definition of terms used in instructions below (see Figure 3-26).
Transfer side:
Secondary Patient Device – the transfer side will always be located on the
attendants right hand side, when standing at the patient’s foot end of the
device, facing the patient. )
VIC Chair – the transfer side will always be located on the patents right hand
side.
Transfer of patient from VIC chair to a secondary device:
Patient preparation –
1. Leave patient secured with restraint straps until actual patient transfer is to
begin
Secondary device preparation –
1. Lock the caster brakes on secondary device.
2. Place device into lowest vertical position.
3. Level patient surface to a horizontal plane.
4. Lower patient rail on transfer side of device.
VIC chair preparation –
1. Ensure chair is in the transport mode (see Section 3-6).
2. Adjust chair height so the seat section is level with patient surface of
secondary device.
3. Lower the patient side rail on the transfer side of the VIC chair.
4. Move the VIC chair so that both devices are facing one another on the
specified transfer sides.
5. Recline the VIC chair into horizontal plane.
6. Maneuver chair so the transfer sides of the two devices are making contact
(limit transfer gap as much as possible).
7. Lock the VIC chair caster brakes.
Patient transfer –
1. Release patient restraint straps
2. Transfer patient.
Transfer of patient from a secondary device to VIC chair
Follow same procedure as in “Transferring from VIC chair to a secondary
device” above except: You must verify that the VIC chair is positioned so that
the patients abdomen is in line with the chair seat before attempting to transfer
a patient to the VIC chair, otherwise tipping may occur.
