Beyond the Instrumentation -
STARCRAFT Marine/SMOKERCRAFT Inc. COMPONENTS & SYSTEMS
Your Starcraft Marine/SmokerCraft Inc. boat may come standard with some of the following equip-
ment. On some models, the equipment may be optional or not available. Consult with you local Star-
craft/SmokerCraft dealer for availability and specific information.
Controls:
Your Starcraft/SmokerCraft boat has a specific set of controls that are needed
to run your boat and to utilize your accessories and optional equipment. Tak-
ing the time to learn proper operation will keep you and your passengers safe.
Steering Systems:
Your Starcraft/SmokerCraft boat has been built with one of three steering sys-
tems - Non-tilt mechanical, tilt mechanical, or tilt hydraulic steering - either as
standard equipment or as an upgrade. Refer to your steering system owner’s
manual for additional information concerning function and maintenance.
Non-Tilt Mechanical:
Steering wheel is connected to a cable that moves the
rudder of your boat. The steering wheel cannot be tilted up and down.
Tilt Mechanical:
Functions the same as the non-tilt, but the steering wheel
can be adjusted for height and angle.
Tilt-Hydraulic:
Hydraulic fluid is pumped through the steering system to a
cylinder that moves the rudder. The steering wheel is less resistant to move-
ment making control of the boat easier to maintain.
Shift & Throttle Control Systems:
Systems can vary from model to model. Refer to your control
system manual for specific information usage and maintenance. Or contact the
engine manufacturer. The following basic information will provide a general
overview:
Forward
&
Reverse:
Rotate the control lever downward about 35 degrees to
the F and R side respectively. Rotating the lever further downward, the throttle
is open.
Free
Accelerator:
The free accelerator button is impossible to use unless the
control lever is in the neutral position. Once in neutral, push the free accelera-
tor button while rotating the lever. The throttle can be opened without shifting
into gear. Use caution while using this button.
Power Trim & Tilt Switch:
If your Starcraft/SmokerCraft boat is equipped
with this switch, it is located on the control lever grip. By using your thumb
you can trim the engine up or down to adjust the tilt. The trim gauge on your
instrument panel should reflect any changes that you make.
Operating
Tips:
Always pause in neutral before shifting to prevent damage to the engine and
drive.
When at low speeds, reverse the throttle to control or brake the boat.
Never operate the boat at high acceleration when in reverse. Doing so can
cause water to flood the stern area of the boat.
