8–16 SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE

FRONT AND REAR AXLE FLUID

Check the oil level only when the engine is
off, the vehicle is level and the axle is cool
enough so that you can rest your fingers
on the axle housing.
Remove the filler plug to check the level.
The oil should come to the bottom edge of
the filler plug hole. If level is low, add oil until
it begins to run out of the filler hole. Rein-
stall the plug securely.
Use only the specified oil as given in the
lubricant chart.
After installing the plug, visually check the
axle housing for leaks or damage.

WARNING

After driving, the axle oil tempera-
ture may be high enough to burn
you. Wait until axle oil and filler
plug are cool before checking oil
level.
