Before deployment, a tethering system must be installed to reduce strain on
the cable connections. Using the supplied nut and bolt, attach the supplied
short tether (Figure 7) at the appropriate Squid hole for desired viewing angle.
Hole 1 (closest to lens) will give you an upwards view, hole 4 (closest to cable)
will give you a slightly downwards view. Attach the other end to the supplied
stainless steel quick link and thread it through the eye of the kevlar cable grip
(Figure 9).
For high speed towing, or when additional weight is added to the Squid, a
long tow line should be installed from the Squid to the surface to reduce
heaving strain on the main cable. If you need to use a tow line, before closing
the quick link, thread the eyelet end of the tow line onto the quick link. Screw
the quick link closed. For a permanent installation, and to aid cable
management, you can affix the tow line to the entire length of the video cable
at 0.5-1 m intervals.
