Lubricate the Thomson Rod

Use the following steps to lubricate the Thomson rod.

1.

While supporting the bottom of the transporter, lift it until it is 
positioned near the middle of the VAX column.

2.

Use a large binder clip to pinch the two sides of the VAX belt together, 
securing the elevated transporter in place.

Note:

The VAX belt is the long belt located on the left side of the VAX 
column, as viewed from the front of the transporter.

3.

Gently push the bottom of the VAX column to move it toward the 
center of the library so that you can access as much of the Thomson rod 
as possible. 

4.

Reach in through the end of the library to clean the reachable portion of 
the Thomson rod using a lint-free cleaning wipe moistened with 
isopropyl alcohol.

Caution

Do not push or pull on the VAX column too forcefully or quickly. Doing so can cause 
the HAX sync belt to slip, resulting in VAX column alignment problems.

Remove the grease from the Thomson rod
