5.

Using the supplied applicator, apply a thin, even layer of HAX grease
(green or blue, PN 90948180) to the reachable portions of the Thomson
rod. Use enough grease so that the shaft has a slippery film over its
entire surface, with no excess grease.

Note:

You can use any non-shedding, non-scratching applicator to
apply the grease.

6.

Slowly and gently pull the VAX column to the end of the Thomson rod;
then push the VAX column back along the Thomson rod, as far as you
can reach.

As you move the VAX column, listen for any abnormal sounds (for
example, metal-on-metal grinding or screeching). Contact Spectra
Logic Technical Support if any abnormal sounds are detected (see

Spectra Logic Technical Support on page 2

).

7.

Repeat Step 5 and Step 6 until the linear bearing block’s interior grease
reservoirs are filled with grease. The bearings will then be able to
distribute the grease evenly along the entire length of the Thomson rod.

You will be able to tell that the linear bearing block’s grease reservoirs
are sufficiently filled when a uniform ring of excess grease gathers at
the end of the Thomson rod.

8.

Wipe away any excess grease with a lint-free cleaning wipe.

Note:

Do not use alcohol.
