2 GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
2.1 The law demands that all gas appliances are installed and serviced by a qualified
installer in accordance with the current GAS SAFETY (INSTALLATION AND USE)
REGULATIONS OR RULES IN FORCE. The installation must comply with these
installation instructions and all relevant parts of Local and National Building
Regulations issued by the Department of the Environment and Local and National
Building Standards (Scotland Consolidation) Regulations issued by the Scottish

Any flue damper should be permanently removed wherever practical. If impractical
the flue damper should be fixed permanently open. Ensure there is a minimum cross-

The flue should be swept before the appliance is fitted except where the installation is
to new premises and there is no obvious obstruction from birds nests etc.
Any flue terminal should have outlets at least equivalent to twice its nominal flue area
and conform to those recommended in BS 715 and BS 1289. Siting of terminals is
given in BS 5440 Pt. 1.The use of a smoke pellet is recommended to check the flue

Non-combustible material at least 25mm (1 in) thick should form the base of any fire
opening, upon which the appliance is sited. The hearth should protrude a minimum of
300mm (1 foot) in front of the fire and be at least 760mm (30 in) wide positioned
symmetrically about the fire opening. If a surround is to be used this must have a
minimum temperature rating of at least 100
