RFC1483 Routed Mode
To separate your network from the service provider’s network when your service
is delivered using RFC1483 (Bridged IP) you will need to create a private network
for your home or business by configuring the SMC70032AE in RFC1483 Routed
mode. Clicking on the “rfc1483 Routed” link under the “CONFIG” menu options
will allow you to configure the modem in rfc1483 Routed mode.
The SMC70032AE will automatically be set up as a DHCP server for your internal
network once you have entered the LAN port information and enabled NAT.
More detailed settings for DHCP can be found under the DHCP Server section.
An example of the LAN port settings is listed below.
LAN port:
LAN IP: 192.168.1.1 (Also set as the gateway for the internal network)
♦

♦
Subnet mask: ff:ff:ff:00 (Hexadecimal form of 255.255.255.0)
Check the “Enable NAT” on the interface option to enable the DHCP server
function
The information for the ADSL port must also be entered in the VPI, VCI, and
Encapsulation Method fields in order to pass information to the Internet. Your
service provider will give you the VPI (Virtual Path Identifier) and VCI (Virtual
Channel Identifier) settings as well as the Encapsulation Method. The VPI range
is from 0 to 4095 and the VCI range is from 1 to 65535.
For your ADSL port IP address you will need to know whether your service
provider assigns the IP information dynamically using DHCP or statically. If the
IP information is dynamically assigned, click on the Enable option beside DHCP
and leave the WAN IP address and WAN Gateway empty. If the IP information is
statically assigned, your service provider will supply you with the WAN IP address
and the WAN Gateway address. You will need to click on the Disable option
beside DHCP and enter the WAN IP address and WAN Gateway address that
your provider has given you.
The screenshot below gives you an example of an SMC70032AE in “rfc1483
Routed” mode with a private internal IP network using the modem as the DHCP
server and a statically assigned WAN IP address from the service provider. You
will also notice that this provider uses a VPI of 0, a VCI of 35, and LLC as an
encapsulation method.
