LOCATION:
The following general information
provides assistance for locating
projected beam smoke detectors. Refer
to the Installation Instructions (shipped
with detectors), the National Fire Alarm
Code
(NFPA 72), and all applicable local
codes for additional information.

1. Smooth, Flat Ceilings. Mount the

units with beam paths between 4”
(102 mm) and 12” (305 mm) from
the ceiling.

2. Sloped Or Peaked Ceiling. The

beam path should be within three
feet (904 mm) of the peak of the
ceiling.

3. Air Stratification. Air stratification

may hinder smoke from reaching
beam detectors, especially those
mounted close to the ceiling. If this is
a possibility, extra beam detectors
should be installed to provide proper
coverage. (Smoke rises because it
is warmer than the surrounding air. Stratification
occurs when the smoke reaches a height where
it is the same temperature as the surrounding
air, thus blocking the smoke from rising to the
ceiling.)

4. Adjacent Units. When two or more adjacent

units are installed in the same area, alternate the
transmitter and receiver locations.

5. Sunlight and Artificial Light  Sources. Mount

the receiver such that external light sources do
not interfere with reception of the transmitter’s
beam. Ensure that extremely bright light sources
such as sunlight and the exposed bulbs of high
pressure sodium, mercury vapor, and metal
halide lights are not pointed directly at the
receiver. Incandescent and fluorescent lighting
that is not directly in the beam path is typically
ignored by the receiver.

6. Beam Path Integrity. Install the transmitter and

receiver with a clear line-of-sight path free of
moving objects. Do not use mirrors or other
reflective paths. The beam should not pass
close to heating, ventilation, or air conditioning
outlets where air flow might circulate smoke
away from the beam. Avoid areas subject to
normal smoke concentrations such as kitchens
and garages.

7. Observe Operating Temperature Limits. Do

not install units where normal ambient
temperature is below 32º F (0º C) or above
130º F (54º C).

REMOTE INDICATOR PANEL:
A remote indicator panel is included that provides
LED indications for Alarm, Trouble, and Power-On.
Test points are available to remotely monitor the
detector calibration voltage. Connections require five
color-coded wires to the receiver.

Panel color is off-white. Mounting requires a single
gang switch box with minimum depth of 2 inches.
Maximum distance is 50 ft (15 m) from the receiver.
