Field of Application
The copper communication converter (CC-CO) is a peripheral device connected to the protection device (see
). This peripheral device enables serial data exchange between 2 protection devices. A single pair of
copper wires is used to achieve this, which can be part of a telecommunication cable or another suitable
symmetrical communication cable (not a Pupin cable).
The data is then converted into readable data for the 2nd protection device (see
) at the partner via
a 2nd CC-CO. Using the CC-COs (main unit/secondary unit), 2 protection devices can communicate synchron-
ously with each other and, while doing so, exchange a large amount of data over long distances. Typical fields
of application are the protection interfaces for differential protection and distance protection for the 7SD52,
7SD61, 7SA52, and 7SA6 devices in the SIPROTEC 4 family, as well as the line protection devices 7SA8, 7SD8,
and 7SL8 in the SIPROTEC 5 family.
The protection device is connected in an interference-free manner via a fiber-optic connection. This module is
an optical 820-nm plug-in module in the protection device that also carries out cycle recovery from the recep-
tion signal. The maximum optical transmission distance is 1.5 km.
The data transmission between the protection devices represents a point-to-point connection that is bit-trans-
parent and synchronous. Data exchange may not take place via switching centers, instead, it is carried out via
pairs of pilot wires in a point-to-point connection.
The CC-CO supports simple commissioning of the entire communication route. It has a relay contact to issue a
device OK message (Life Contact), and is equipped with a wide-range power-supply unit that covers the entire
DC and AC auxiliary-voltage range.
