INSPECTING BURNERS
Check pilot flame pattern and burner patterns
PILOT FLAME PATTERN
Figure 13 shows a correct pilot fl ame pattern.
Figure 14 shows an incorrect pilot flame pattern.
The incorrect pilot flame is not touching the
thermocouple. This will cause the thermocouple
to cool. When the thermocouple cools, the heater
will shut down.
If pilot fl ame pattern is incorrect, as shown in
Figure 14:

Note: The pilot flame on natural gas units will
have a slight curve, but flame should be blue and
have no yellow or orange color.

Periodically inspect all burner fl ame holes with the
heater running. All slotted burner fl ame holes should
be open with yellow fl ame present. All round burner
fl ame holes should be open with a small blue fl ame
present. Some burner fl ame holes may become
blocked by debris or rust, with no fl ame present. If
so, turn off heater and let cool. Remove blockage.
Blocked burner fl ame holes will create soot.

The correct burner flame pattern shows yellow tip-
ping at the top of a large blue flame. If burner flame
