The Washdown Pump Connector
A quick-release raw water washdown hose connector is lo-
cated on the starboard side of the cockpit near the baitwell. It
is identified by a black plastic cover that opens to access the
connector fitting. The connector fitting has an automatic valve
that is always closed until the washdown hose is connected.
The hose requires a special fitting that snaps into the connector
and activates the automatic valve. The cover on the connector
should always be in the closed position to keep the connec-
tor clean when the washdown hose is not attached. Contact
your Scout dealer for information on replacement fittings and
hoses.
DO NOT ALLOW THE WATER PUMP TO RUN DRY.
THE PUMP WORKS ON DEMAND AND WILL NOT
SHUT OFF AUTOMATICALLY IF NO WATER IS
AVAILABLE. THIS CAN RESULT IN DAMAGE TO
THE PUMP. ALWAYS TURN THE RAW WATER
SWITCH OFF WHEN THE RAW WATER SYSTEM IS
NOT IN USE.
6.3 Baitwell
Sea water is provided to the baitwell by a 12-volt circulation
pump. The pump is designed to carry a constant flow of water
to the baitwell. The pump does not have a pressure sensor
and is activated by the Baitwell switch in the cockpit switch
panel. There is also a light in the baitwell that is activated by
the Baitwell Light switch in the cockpit switch panel.
An overflow built into the baitwell automatically controls the
water level. Always turn the pump off at the switch panel when
the baitwell is not in use.
To fill the baitwell, insert the plug into the drain fitting at the
bottom of the baitwell. Make sure the sea cock is open and
activate the Baitwell switch. When the water level reaches
the overflow, it will begin to circulate. When the recirculating
baitwell is activated, a separate pump will recirculate and aer-
ate the water that is in the baitwell without drawing additional
sea water into the system. A valve in the side of the baitwell
is used to regulate the flow of oxygen in the water when the
Aerator is activated.
The baitwell raw water intake is equipped with a scoop that
will supply water to the baitwell if the pump should fail and
helps prime the system during normal operation. To supply
water to the baitwell using the scoop, make sure the sea cock
valve is open and run the boat at a speed above 15 miles per
hour. Water will circulate through the baitwell and out the
overflow.
To drain the baitwell, turn off the baitwell pump and remove
the plug in the drain fitting at the bottom of the baitwell. When
Baitwell
the baitwell has completely drained, use the washdown hose
to flush the baitwell and drain of debris.
The baitwell sea cock valve should be closed whenever the
baitwell is not in use. This will prevent water from entering
the baitwell while the boat is cruising.
Note: Do not use a baitwell as a dry storage area when
it is not in use. Sea water could accidently be
delivered to the baitwell from the thru-hull fitting
and damage equipment stored there.
A RUPTURED RAW WATER INTAKE OR PRESSURE
LINE COULD CAUSE THE BOAT TO TAKE ON WATER
AND SINK. ALWAYS TURN THE RAW WATER
SYSTEMS OFF AND CLOSE THE THRU-VALVES
WHEN LEAVING THE BOAT UNATTENDED.
6.4 Air Conditioning (Optional)
The air conditioner is self-contained and seawater cooled.
The system has an AC centrifugal raw water pump to supply
seawater that cools the condensing unit as it circulates through
the system and is discharged overboard. The pump and sea
strainer for the air conditioner is located in the stern bilge.
Seawater is supplied to the pump by a thru hull fitting located
in the hull near the pump. A sea strainer between the pump
and thru hull fitting protects the system from contaminants
that could damage the pump or the air conditioning system.
Make sure the seawater pump receives adequate seawater by
periodically cleaning the sea strainer basket.
You should refer to the air conditioner owner’s manual for
more information on the operation and maintenance of the air
conditioner.
