Proper flight area
Select a suitable area, ideally with a level ground. The flight area should be free from buildings, trees or other obst-
acles that could create a swirling effect or obstruct the kite.
Lee is the side facing downwind, and luv is the side facing upwind. The kite will fly downwind, which means that you
as the pilot will stand with the wind at your back.
The perfect wind window
Undertake your first flying attempts under medium, even wind conditions!
The kite will fly within the wind window that is approximately of the size of a quarter sphere and forms around the
pilot (see figure 3 on page 2).
Zenith (position at 12 o’clock)
➞
kite stable and without tensile force
Wind window edge (positions at 3 and 9 o’clock)
➞
lowest tensile force; kite comes to a stop
Power zone
➞
maximum wind pressure on the kite.
Start-up
1. Before start-up, make sure all connecting parts are properly secured and the kite is not damaged in any way.
2. Check the wind direction and determine the starting point within the wind center. The wind is at your back.
3. When undertaking your first attempts, ask another person to assist you by holding the kite with the cords
slightly tense. The openings of the air chambers face upwards for the chambers to fill with air.
4. Hold your hands extended to the front and parallel to each other. Evenly pull both cords until the kite takes off.
If the wind is weak, it is recommended to take a small step backwards.
Flying
1. During your first attempts, try to get the kite fly straight up towards zenith.
2. When pulling the right guiding cord, the kite will move to the right.
3. When pulling to the left, the kite will move to the left. The stronger you pull, the narrower the turning radius of
the kite.
4. Keep the coils at same length and in neutral position, in order for the kite to remain above you at zenith.
5. Never cross your arms, but always keep your hands parallel to each other.
6. When pulling long enough on one side, the kite will fly a complete circle, causing the guiding cords to revolve
around their own axis. That is not a problem, as they will untwist during the next circling turn in the opposite
direction.
Safe landing
1. Avoid landing the kite within the wind center. To do that, fly to the right or left towards the wind window edge,
where there is less tensile force present.
2. Slightly pull the flying cord that is facing the ground, in order for the kite to slowly lower to the ground.
3. Just before the kite is about to land, take a few steps forward to reduce the tension of the guiding cords.
4. In order for the kite to remain on the ground, it is recommended to have another person receive and secure
the kite after landing.
Maintenance and care
The kite is easy to clean and does not require any special maintenance. Remove dirt with lukewarm, mild soapy
water. Wrap up the kite after it has dried completely. Store it at a location protected against direct sunlight.
We wish you optimal wind conditions and lots of fun with your SCHILDKRÖT kite!
