the table. Take a number line with numbers or
a low number line, turn one of the frog cards,
see how many squares he hops and place the
number card on the right spot. If the frog hops
over one square, then he hops from 1 to 3. If he
hops over two squares, he hops from 1 to 4. You
can also play this game with the frog hopping
backwards.
The number line with numbers
- Place the finger cards, the flower cards, the tally
cards, or the dice cards on the correct number
on the number line.
Place the card marked ‘zero’ at the start of the
number line.
- Two children take a numbered number line
each and number cards from 0 -12. They place
the card with ‘0’ at the start of the number
line and then place the numbers where they
belong on the number line. They then each
take a blank number line and try to place
the numbers in the right order on that line.
Compare with the numbered number line.
- Cover one or more of the numbers on the
number line and see if the children can guess
which ones are covered.
The small number line
- Search for adjoining numbers, - first 1 up or 1
down, - then 2 up or 2 down
Practise first with the different sets of structure
cards before moving on to the number cards.
Shuffle the cards and place them face down on
the table. Turn one of the cards and place it in
the middle of the number line. Then look for
the card that is 1 up or 1 down from that
number. (do not use the card marked zero)
- Higher or lower with numbers
Which number is it? Place one or more
numbers face down on the middle of the
number line with 5 squares and ask questions
to try and guess the number or numbers.
With froggy
Take the cards with the frog hopping 1,2 or 3
squares. If the frog hops over 1 square, then he
hops from 1 to 3. If he hops over 2 squares, he
hops from 1 to 4 and if he hops over three squares,
he hops from 1 to 5.
Two players take a set of cards each, e.g. the
flower cards and the dice cards. Shuffle the frog
cards and place the deck face down on the table.
Place the flower cards and the dice cards face up
on the table. Take an empty number line and turn
over one of the frog cards. How far does the frog
hop? 1, 2 or 3 squares? Place the correct number
on the number line.
Shuffle the cards with the frog hopping back
and forth so that you can move up or down the
number line.
Number bingo
Take two number lines numbered 1 to 12, 2 sets of
cards with numbers, and the cloth bag. Put the
number cards in the bag. Each player then takes a
number card from the bag. Place the number on
the correct place on the number line. If you pick a
number that you have already had, then bad luck.
Place that card back in the bag. Whoever fills the
number line first, wins.
Splitting
Take the cards marked with balls and a number
line with numbers.
Split the cards into two piles, try to recognise the
different formations and count out the numbers,
and then place the cards on the correct number.
In this way you can learn that the number 5 can
be made up of :: and . and of :. and :
