4.3 Setting the Squelch
The Squelch circuit sets the threshold for cutting off
the receiver when the signal is too weak for
reception of anything but noise.
To properly set the squelch, rotate the
SQ
knob
counterclockwise until noise is heard.
Then rotate clockwise until background noise
disappears.
4.4 Setting the Power Output
Press and release the
HI/LO / USER
key to toggle the TX power from LOW
(1 watt) to HIGH (5 watts). The corresponding LO or HI indicator appears on the
LCD.
Initial contact should always be attempted using low power. You should switch to
high power only when contact can not be made on low power in emergency
situations. This procedure is specified by the FCC but is also part of marine
communications courtesy and will save on battery life.
Note:
Some channels are limited by regulation to be low power only. If the
HI/LO operation request is denied, an error tone beeps.
