Troubleshooting Loco-Sound Problems

Although Loco-Sound has been designed and engineered for ease ofuse, you may have
some questions duringinitial operation. The following table should answer most

When I first turn the power on, the
enginewillnotbegintorun.
TheenginewillnotstartafterIpress
theDirectionbutton.
Ican'tgetthewhistletoblowwhenI

thebellbutton.
Youmaybepressingthebuttontooquickly. Try pressing
the whistlebutton more slowly, taking approximately one
fullsecondtofullydepressthebutton.
Youmaybepressingthebuttontooquickly. Trypressing
the bell button moreslowly,taking approximatelyone full
secondtofullydepressthebutton.
This is normalbehavior. To prevent accidental high-speed
start-ups, Loco-Soundis programmedtostartupinneutral
anytimetrackpowerhasbeenturnedoffforseveralseconds.
Seethe"BasicOperation"sectionformoredetails.
Youmaynotbesendingenoughpowertothetracktopower
theengine. Pressthe throttle up for a few more seconds to
increasetrackpower.
Lock-out
Remedy
I can't get the engine to run after I
power upthetransformer. Itsitsstill
withtheenginesoundsrunning.
The engine won't lock into forward,
neutral,orreverse.
Theenginemaybelockedintotheneutralposition. Follow
the procedure in the "Lock into a Direction" section to
unlocktheengine'sdirection.
Enginespeedmustbebelow10scalemph(approx.10volts
orlessinconventionalmode).
Volume
Remedy
Thesounds seem distorted,
especially whentheHornorbellis
activated.
No sound.
Loco-Sound volume is set too high.
Turn the volume
controlknobonthebottomofthechassiscounter-clockwise
toreducethevolume.
Volume issettoolow,adjustvolumecontrolknob on the
bottom of thechassisclockwiseto increase thevolumeor
checkconnectortospeaker.
Proto-Cast and -Dispatch
Remedy
When I trytoplaymusicormy
voicethroughmy engine's speakers,
thereispopping and interference.
MyProto-Cast soundsplaytoo
quietlyorunclearly.
When I trytoplayProto-Cast,the
engine'ssoundskeepbreakinginon
myrecording.
When I runtwoLoco-Sound
engines on tracks near eachother,
the Proto-Cast andDispatch sounds
play frombothengines,notjust
from theoneconnectedtotheaudio
source or microphone.
Cleanthe trackwith denatured alcohol,asdescribedinthe
"CleaningtheWheels,Tires,andTrack"section of this
book.
Unplugthe cable between theaudiosourceandtheremote
lock-on. Re-plugitintotheaudiosourcefirst,thenintothe
lock-on,pushingfirmlytomakesureitisfullyinstalled.
Your recording may be playing tooquietly to triggerthe
engine to stop playing its own sound set. Turnupthe
volumeoftheaudiosourceyouareusing.
This is normalbehavior. Because Loco-Sound usesradio
waves to transmit thesoundtotheengine, other Loco-
Sound engines in the same rangewillalsopickupthe
sound. Try moving one of the sets.
