Chapter 4 – Initial Configuration
An Alteon Application Switch device is ready to perform basic ADC functions without prior
configuration. The Alteon software provides a variety of options for accessing and configuring the
device. Some of the more advanced features require some administrative configuration before they
can be used effectively.
Alteon Application Switch supports the following interfaces:
•
A built-in, text-based command line interface (CLI) and menu system for device configuration
and management through a local terminal or remote Telnet or SSH session.
•
SNMP support for access through network management software such as HP OpenView.
•
A Browser-Based Interface (BBI) that is accessible through a Web browser after enabling HTTP
or HTTPS access using the IP address of the device.

Verifying Accessibility of Management Ports
Alteon lets you manage your devices via BBI over HTTP/HTTPS and via CLI over Telnet/SSH. Make
sure the connectivity between your client station and the device is not blocked by a firewall.
Configuring the Management Port
The configuration of the management port for Alteon Application Switches depends on the platform:

Caution:
If you want to change the function of the 6/MNG 1 port after there is a configuration
on the device, you need to save configuration, delete the configuration using q1,
reboot device, and reconfigure the function of the of the 6/MNG 1 port using the
Startup Configuration procedure.
To configure the 6 / MNG 1 management port for dedicated out-of-band management
1. Ensure that an ASCII console is connected to the device through the RJ-45–to–DE-9 cable and
that console computer is turned on.
