5–Validation Methods for DCB and FCoE
Validation Step 2—FIP Validation

In summary, the FIP link initialization process is successful—the end device
successfully connects to the switch, and the FCoE virtual link is set up. Similar
results should be seen on the FCoE target side. When the FCoE link is up, the
end device sends an FIP Keep Alive frame every eight seconds so that the switch
knows that the device is present even when the link is idle. If the switch does not
receive FIP Keep Alives from a logged-in device, it will automatically disconnect
that device with a FIP Clear Virtual Link message after a period of approximately
2.5 times the value of the variable FKA_ADV_PERIOD.
To validate that the switch disconnects end devices after 20 seconds, use the
JDSU Jammer to remove all FIP Keep Alive messages from the link after an end
device has successfully logged-in. The switch sends the FIP Clear Virtual Link
message after 20 seconds.
Figure 5-7
shows that the switch requested that the end device send FIP Keep
Alive frames every 8000 ms. The information is shown in the FIP Discovery
Advertisement frames (both to All_ENode_MACs and All_FCF_MACs).

between the two adjacent FIP Keep Alive frames.
Figure 5-8
shows a difference
of 8.07 seconds.
