4 Tubingen Hip Flexion and Abduction Orthosis
Structure of the orthosis
The Tubingen hip flexion and abduction orthosis consists of the
shoulder harness and the thigh supports, which are joined together
with beaded cords. It is initially fitted by your doctor or orthotics
and prosthetics professional (O&P professional). They provide you
with detailed information on how to use the orthosis at home.
Parents operate the four elements marked on the diagram:
Shoulder harness with hook-and-loop closure
Thigh supports with spreader bar
White closures
Beaded cords, coloured (green/white)
!
Do not adjust red elements! Settings on the red elements
of the orthosis are changed only by your doctor or O&P
professional. Please contact them if you unintentionally change
these settings.
Optimal hip development
When your baby’s legs are flexed slightly more than 90°
and abducted about 30–45° from the body, they are in
the optimal position for natural hip development. Babies
instinctively assume the human position, even in the
womb.
The Tubingen hip flexion and abduction orthosis
supports this favourite position and thus promotes
subsequent development of the hip joints outside the
womb. Your doctor or O&P professional individually
adjusts the orthosis to your baby at the start of therapy
and makes recurring adjustments at regular intervals.

Parent guide
Dear Parents,
More than one quarter of a million babies around the world have worn
the Tubingen hip flexion and abduction orthosis since the late 1980s.
It supports subsequent development of the hip joints in case of hip
dysplasia, which is the delayed development of the acetabulum.
Your baby’s hips will develop normally if you use the orthosis correctly
and consistently. Please observe the notices that follow and read all
information carefully. You will see that once you have put the orthosis on
yourself a few times, it quickly becomes a familiar daily accessory just like
nappies and romper suits.

Problems while wearing?
If your child fights the orthosis even after the settling in period
or you have the impression that the fit of the orthosis is not
optimal, please contact your doctor.
