Setup
Please ensure that only qualified persons install and operate the crossover. Improper cabling or setup could
damage your speaker systems.
Rack installation
This unit is built for 19" racks (483 mm) but can also be used as a tabletop unit. In order to ensure sufficient
cooling of the unit, air must always be able to flow freely through all air vents. For rack installation, 1 unit is
required. You can fix the unit with four M6 screws.
Cable connections
Disconnect the crossover from the mains and switch off the audio units to be connected before making or
changing the connections. For highest sound quality, only use high-grade, preferably short cables for all
connections.
1)
Make the audio connections via XLR connectors. The jacks are designed for balanced signals.
However, it is also possible to connect sources with unbalanced signals. Balanced cables guarantee a
better protection against interference in case of long cable runs.
2)
The labels on the rear panel will help you connect the source devices and amplifiers to your crossover.
To operate the crossover in 2-way stereo mode, follow the labels above the connectors. For 3-way
mono operation, refer to the labels below the connectors.
3)
Connect the outputs of the signal source (equalizer, mixing console, etc.) to the inputs of the crossover.
Make sure the source is switched off. The crossover has an input impedance of 50 kΩ. This makes the
audio inputs suitable for use with any low-impedance source.
4)
Connect the amplifiers to drive your speaker systems to the appropriate outputs of the crossover. Make
sure the amplifiers are switched off.
5)
Connect the crossover to a mains outlet with the mains cable. Before plugging the unit in, always make
sure that the power supply matches the product specification voltage.
6)
Finally make sure all components are properly connected. Ensure that the outputs of the crossover are
connected to the appropriate inputs of the amplifiers that drive the speaker systems. Activate the HF
outputs first. In case of wrong cabling, high frequency (HF) audio signals will come out of bass speakers
that cannot be harmed this way. Vice versa, the low frequency (LF) audio signals would destroy your
HF speakers.
Selecting the operating mode and crossover frequencies
Always start the system setup by selecting the operating mode. Prior to switching on, use the rear MODE
switch to set the crossover to the proper mode of operation. Improper setup of the crossover or the use of
the MODE switch while the equipment is powered on may send heavy interference noise to the crossover’s
outputs which could damage your speaker systems. Therefore great care should be taken when setting all
switches. Use the literature supplied with your speaker systems to properly set up the mode of operation and
crossover frequencies to the manufacturer’s specifications. The XO-230 is applicable for 2-way stereo
systems or 3-way mono systems. The crossover frequencies are continuously adjustable between 45 Hz und
9.6 kHz. Most 2-way systems cross over between 500 Hz and 5 kHz. 3-way systems usually have a low/mid
crossover point between 200 Hz and 2 kHz, and a mid/high crossover point between 800 Hz and 8 kHz.
Powering up
To protect your audio equipment, specifically your speakers, follow this power-up sequence: Set all output
volume controls of any equipment to minimum. Switch on the signal source first, then the crossover. Always
switch on amplifiers last. Then set the signal source to its nominal operating level. Slowly turn up the volume
controls of your amplifier(s) until you can hear signal at a comfortable level. Make adjustments using tools
such as a measurement microphone, real-time analyzer, sound generator and familiar music material. For
switching off, follow the inverse sequence: always switch off amplifiers first, then the crossover and then the
signal source.
