Getting Started Using FirstGear for the Model RT328 ISDN Router
1-4
Introduction
Network Checklist
Networks connected through the router must be properly configured for Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networking. For detailed information about configuring
Windows 95 for TCP/IP, refer to
Appendix A, “Configuring TCP/IP
.” For more information on
TCP/IP, refer to Chapter 1 of
Reference Guide for the Model RT328 ISDN Router
.
The Model RT328 router is capable of automatically assigning IP and gateway addresses to other
devices on the LAN, using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) feature. However,
for initial setup, at least one PC must be manually configured in order to use the FirstGear program
to access the Model RT328 router.
The TCP/IP configuration requirements are:
•
The Model RT328 router and all workstations or PCs on your local area network must have
established IP addresses. These are typically assigned by your network manager or Internet
service provider (ISP), or you can assign private addresses if you are using the Network
Address Translator (NAT) feature.
•
If you are using the NAT feature, one nonprivate IP address must be assigned to the router. The
nonprivate IP address can be in the form of a permanent static address or a temporary address
that is dynamically assigned each time your router calls the remote network or ISP. This
address will not be the same as the LAN IP address for your Model RT328 router.
•
All workstations or PCs on your local network must have the LAN IP address of the
Model RT328 router defined either as the default gateway or as an entry in the static routes
table.
•
The network portion (as determined by the netmask) of the IP addresses of your LAN must be
different from that of any remote networks that are connected.
